During World War II, the British military modified the standard No.4 rifle in 1942 by adding a wooden cheek rest and a No.32 3.5x telescopic sight, designating it as the No.4 Mk I (T) sniper rifle. Subsequent iterations included the Mk II (1943) and Mk III (1944). Renowned British firearms manufacturer Holland & Holland, alongside BSA (Birmingham Small Arms) and Canada’s Long Branch Arsenal, contributed to these modifications. The No.4 Mk I (T) remained in service until the 1960s.
In the 1950s, the British Army adapted the No.4 Mk I (T) to fire the NATO-standard 7.62×51mm cartridge, redesignating it as the L42A1 rifle. This variant served as the British military’s primary sniper rifle until its replacement by the L96A1 in 1982.
During the 1970s, alongside the L42A1, the Royal Small Arms Factory (RSAF Enfield) developed the Enforcer sniper rifle in 7.62×51mm NATO for British police forces. The Enforcer series later became a highly sought-after collector’s item on the civilian market.
